Gawith & Hoggarth is probably the most iconic producer of pipe tobacco. The pipe tobaccos are produced using a process that dates back to 1792. Even the same machines are used. Why? This is the only way to reproduce the results of the old methods. This is not possible with new machines.
Additives such as preservatives and humectants are simply not used. Even the subtle toppings come from natural essential oils and extracts. Here you will find tobaccos as pure and "old school" as they can be.
Production takes place in Cumbria in the north of England.
The Ennerdale Flake is a legend worldwide. It is one of the icons of Lakeland tobaccos. A flake with unmistakable characteristics and strength.
Selected Virginia tobaccos from Brazil, Zimbabwe and Malawi are mixed with sun-dried Malawi for a pleasant sweetness, strength and cool smoke. There is also a little Malawi Burley, which absorbs the casing and aroma well.
In the background there is an aroma of almonds, which is complemented by fruit aromas, vanilla and the typical English aroma that is known from varieties such as Condor or St. Bruno.

Beim Öffnen der Dose verströmt der Tabak sein betörendes Mandel-Aroma, unterlegt mit feinen Vanille-Aromen. Auch das typische Lakeland-Topping ist erkennbar, aber nicht beherrschend. Zum Anzünden benötigt man schon 3-4 Streichhölzer und wird mit dem Mandelaroma belohnt, während das Vanille und Lakeland-Aroma dezent im Hintergrund bleiben. Auch der Mandelgeschmack verliert sich deutlich spätestens mit der zweiten Pfeifenhälfte; ab hier legt der Flake in der Stärke etwas zu und zeigt hier und da auch einmal ein paar raue Ecken. Insgesamt scheint mir der Flake nicht so stark aromatisiert wie der ursprünglich nur in GB erhältliche lose Flake, aber ich mag mich da täuschen. Fazit: ein nicht zu stark aromatisierter Flake, sehr angenehm zu rauchen und unbedingt empfehlenswert.
