The art of pipe smoking, step by step
Die-hard pipe smokers quickly and firmly pack the tobacco into the pipe bowl, light the pipe and smoke and smoke and smoke. This is certainly not the best method for beginners. Because if it cracks, the pipe keeps going out or it even smells like wood, you'll need a new pipe for your second attempt.
First, open the tobacco you want to use and ‘feel’ it. If it is very moist, it is advisable to dry the first layer. Please check regularly to make sure it does not dry out completely.
The best method for filling a pipe is the third method. First, smoke a pipe with a third of the pipe bowl filled. If this works well for you, you can try two-thirds and later a full pipe bowl.
The tobacco should be packed more tightly at the bottom of the pipe bowl than at the top. Therefore, pack the tobacco more loosely at the bottom and more tightly towards the top. Most beginners pack their pipes too tightly. However, a pipe that is packed too loosely can be adjusted and packed more tightly while smoking.
When lighting and drawing on the pipe, the top layer of tobacco rises. Press it down slightly with the tamper. If necessary, you may need to relight the pipe until the entire filling glows.
When properly packed and lit, the pipe will only smoke a little. If the pipe is too easy to draw on, use the tamper again.
Pipe smokers are puffers. Inexperienced or hardened pipe smokers inhale the smoke into their lungs. The draw on the pipe should be even and slow. This allows the tongue to absorb the flavours and prevents it from being punished by hot steam.
When you have finished smoking your pipe, allow it to cool completely before cleaning it. This allows the ash to absorb the condensate. Only then should you clean it. You should always leave a pipe to rest for 24 hours. This will ensure that you get a lot of enjoyment out of your pipe.
