The Moisture Content of Tobacco
As soon as we open a vacuum-sealed tin, our tobacco begins to dry out. Pouches and some seasonal tobaccos in decorative tins also lose moisture over time, even when unopened.
The tobacco then changes in its flavor and smoking characteristics, and naturally, it also feels different. But this isn't necessarily a bad thing. Generally, the tobacco is packed with excess moisture, because some time can pass between the tobacco producer, the retailer, and the first time it's opened by the pipe smoker, during which time moisture can be lost.
For this reason, however, the tobacco is often far too moist, ignites poorly, and is difficult to hold. The pipe also heats up quite quickly. Therefore, re-moistening fresh packs is usually unnecessary and, due to the potential for mold growth, even counterproductive.
The right condition is crucial, and this depends on the type of tobacco. Flavored tobaccos can be slightly moister—they need this to carry the aroma. However, the tobacco shouldn't feel wet or sticky. A very soft and "fluffy" consistency is just right. While completely dried-out flavored tobaccos can be revived, the original flavoring won't be restored, as much of it will have evaporated with the moisture.
With natural tobaccos, we recommend a drier approach. This benefits both the flavor and handling. Here, it can even feel quite dry and audibly crackle. But never so dry that the tobacco breaks.
If you plan to store your tobacco for an extended period, an airtight glass container without additional humidification is ideal. Snap-top jars with rubber seals are a good example. You can then remove the desired amount to enjoy and, if necessary, allow it to air dry slightly.
Sometimes, however, adding moisture to tobacco is unavoidable. In such cases, a humidifier or a clay humidifying stone can be placed inside the tobacco. These release moisture slowly and evenly. In any case, it is not advisable to use vegetables or fruit – the risk of mold growth is far too high.
Therefore, it's better to enjoy your tobacco slightly drier than too moist, and pay attention to how it feels.
