The White Goddess: Meerschaum Pipes
Among connoisseurs, it is reverently referred to as the ‘White Goddess’: the meerschaum pipe. Long before the now common briar wood conquered the market, meerschaum was considered the ultimate choice for discerning connoisseurs. But what makes this material so special?
Origin and myth
Contrary to popular belief, meerschaum does not come from the ocean. It is sepiolite, a rare magnesium silicate that is laboriously mined up to 80 metres below the Anatolian soil in Turkey. Since 1961, there has been an export ban on the raw material, which is why genuine block meerschaum pipes are now almost exclusively handmade in Turkey.
The unbeatable advantages:
- Taste neutrality: Meerschaum does not distort the aroma of the tobacco – perfect for testing new blends.
- No break-in period: Unlike wooden pipes, meerschaum is ready to use straight away.
- Fireproof: It is physically impossible for the bowl to burn through.
- Natural filter: Its enormous porosity absorbs moisture and condensation like a sponge.
The magical colour change
Probably the most fascinating feature is the metamorphosis: over the years, smoking transforms the bright white colour into an elegant amber or gold tone. This happens through the absorption of tobacco juices in combination with the protective wax layer on the surface.
