How do you smoke flakes properly?

Folding, rubbing out, or packing whole? What's the best way to smoke flake cut tobacco?

Smoking a flake is probably one of the things a pipe smoker particularly appreciates. The cool burn, the perfect tobacco blend, and the ritual-like preparation combine to create a shared moment of great pleasure. However, enjoying flake pipe tobacco is not difficult. There are various methods for smoking flake tobacco, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Fold and Tuck Method:

In this method, the flake slice is creased in the middle and folded to create a "U" shape. In our opinion, this is the best and most sensible method for smoking a flake.

  1. Take as many flake slices as you want to smoke in one pipe and fit into one filling. This can be half a slice, but with large pipes, it can also be more than one. Crease the slice lengthwise in the middle so that at the end, approximately half slices lie on top of each other at full length.
  2. While holding the tobacco at the ends of the U, stuff it into the pipe, possibly with a slight twisting motion. Occasionally, some tobacco still protrudes over the pipe bowl. This can simply be pinched off with your fingers.
  3. Now, regulate the draw of your pipe as usual by gently pressing it down.
  4. Now the pipe can be lit evenly.

Rub-Out Method:

In this method, the flake slice is rubbed between the fingers or in the palm of the hand until it has a loose consistency. The tobacco is then placed in the pipe bowl and lightly pressed down. This method ensures more even combustion but is a bit more time-consuming.

Plug Method:

In this method, the flake slice is placed as a whole in the pipe bowl and only lightly pressed down. This method is the simplest but can cause the tobacco to not draw well or become too hot.

It may be that the flake is a little more difficult to light, as it is a pressed tobacco. But once the flake is glowing, the rest almost takes care of itself.

Enjoy and have a multifaceted pleasure with your flake!
