The Little Tobacco Guide

All pipe tobacco, and all the raw tobaccos described below, come from the same tobacco plant: Nicotiana tabacum. Only the methods of storage and processing result in such a variety of raw tobaccos and the diversity of the final products.

There is another tobacco plant (Nicotiana rustica), which, however, is not used for pipe tobacco due to its high nicotine content.

Raw Tobaccos:

Virginia: A popular tobacco, currently the most frequently used base for tobacco blends. It has a high natural sugar and aroma content in its tobacco leaves. This makes Virginia sweet and aromatic.

Burley: This tobacco has a very low sugar content, often none at all. It is known for its robust aroma with a slight cocoa note, but without sweetness. Burley burns well in a pipe.

Latakia: Originally from Syria, this tobacco is dried in the sun and then hung over the smoke of an open fire. The tobacco leaves absorb the smoke aroma, which is noticeable in the taste and smell when smoking. It is so strong and spicy that it is only used as an addition to blends. Even strong Latakia blends rarely consist of pure Latakia.

Cavendish: This is not a natural tobacco variety, but rather the processing of Virginia and Burley tobaccos by pressing them together while simultaneously heating or steaming them.

Aroma:

Tobaccos often receive a light casing, meaning an addition of natural flavoring. This flavoring is not perceptible by taste or smell. It serves to balance the raw tobacco.

Only the so-called top flavor, which is introduced into the tobacco through gravy, is the familiar aromatic addition that can be smelled and tasted.

Cut Types:

Loose Cut: Loosely cut pipe tobacco. Easy to pack and enjoy. Loose cuts are not pressed.

Pressed Tobacco: Pressed tobaccos are produced by pressing, usually under heat. Pressed tobaccos include flakes (slices of pressed tobacco cubes) and curly cuts or rolls (tobacco rolled into a strand).

For easier use by pipe smokers, pressed tobaccos can be pre-rubbed (ready rubbed) or cut (curly cut, cube cut, broken flake).

Here you will find instructions for smoking flake tobacco: Flake Smoking Made Easy

Mixtures: A mixture of loose tobacco and pressed tobaccos.
