As early as 1840, Juan Antonio Bances and Julián Àlverez Granda founded the brand in Cuba, honoring the legendary US senator, brilliant orator, and influential politician Henry Clay (1777-1852).
The cigars quickly achieved cult status among aficionados, but this declined after the brand was nationalized following Fidel Castro's rise to power. Due to the US embargo, the rights outside of Cuba were transferred and now belong to Gemstone Investment Holding Ltd., which owns an extensive portfolio of cigar brands and distribution channels.
Henry Clay is distributed through the distributor 5th Avenue, which holds the exclusive rights to Habanos in Germany. Until now, the brand was only marketed in the United States. International expansion began in mid-2024, and Henry Clay arrived in Germany in spring 2025 as 5th Avenue's fourth non-Cuban brand. Other brands include Vega Fina, Flor de Copán and Capitol cigars.
Henry Clay was known as ‘the Great Compromiser’ for his pivotal role in three important compromises in American history: the Missouri Compromise (1820), the Tariff Compromise (1833), and the Compromise of 1850.
Interestingly, Clay was also nicknamed ‘War Hawk’ - a term for legislators who favoured military force and land expansion. This seemingly contradictory name can be found today in the Henry Clay War Hawk cigar series.
The vitolas of the Henry Clay War Hawk cigars are handmade in the La Flor de Copán manufactory in Honduras. To achieve the complex blend, the Grupo de Maestros (master blender) has developed a special fermentation process. The blend itself consists of a Honduran Criollo 98 for the filler and a Broadleaf for the binder, surrounded by a Connecticut wrapper from Ecuador. In 2021, the American magazine ‘Cigar Aficionado’ recognised War Hawk as one of the best cigars of the year with an impressive rating of 95 points.
The 5th Avenue tasting notes describe the burn as even, the strength as medium and the wrapper as having silky matt, fine veins. The flavour profile lists floral notes, leather, almond and sweet walnut, coffee, dried fruit, vanilla and nutmeg. There is also the flavour of smoked cedar, coconut, cinnamon and pepper.
