Michele Sottocasa was born in 1983 and studied graphics, photo art and then graphic design. He worked as a graphic designer and art director.
His passion for pipe making developed in the years 2010-2012. He chose the name "la Biota", which means "naked" in the Lombard dialect, because it is his attitude that the pipe cannot hide secrets but must be the absolute truth. It should be an object that speaks for itself and needs no explanation.
Two concepts are recognizable in his pipes: on the one hand, the resumption of classic references under the influence of his own interpretation and, on the other hand, the resumption of references to nature. He only uses Italian briar to which he likes to add spectacular horn rings, deer antlers and various appliques.
His technology is first class and connects nature and people in a unique way.
The material bog oak is a light, subfossil wood that has surprisingly good smoking properties due to its porosity.
This La Biota pipe made of bog oak was also sandblasted. This creates a very nice structure on the surface.
The shank end is made of real horn.
