Ser Jacopo (full name "Ser Jacopo dalla Gemma") was founded in 1982 by Giancarlo Guidi after learning his craft at Mastro de Paja.
The name and logo go back to an Italian nobleman of the Renaissance.
After the death of Giancarlo Guidi in 2012, the company was continued by his partner and supplier Maurizio Fraternale.
Ser Jacopo's pipes are generally classic, but with sometimes artistic interpretations of form and, above all, application. Creative approaches come into play, such as in the Picta series, in which the pipes are modeled on famous paintings.
All pipes bear the slogans "Fatta a mano" (Handmade) and "Per aspera ad astra" (Through hardship to the stars).
The idea for this pipe goes back to Leonardo da Vinci. Around 1510, Louis XII commissioned Leonardo da Vinci to design a pipe that would stay as cool as possible. He was referring to the clay pipes common at the time, whose bowls would get extremely hot. Leonardo da Vinci developed a double-walled pipe. The circulating air in the space between them acted as a heat shield and as a cooling agent. Records of this idea were not discovered until 1982.
Ser Jacopo took up this idea and implemented it in the now-common material, briar. The functionality is the same as Leonardo da Vinci's design – with a double wall to keep the pipe cool. The pipe is also decorated with plenty of sterling silver.
