The End of an Era: Poul Winslow Retires

There are moments when the pipe world holds its breath. Poul Winslow—one of the most influential, creative, and masterful pipe makers of our time—has officially announced his retirement. No new pipes will leave his workshop in Hvidovre, Denmark.

Those who know Poul understand that his pipes were never merely tools for enjoying tobacco; they were—and remain—living works of art with a story to tell. His journey began back in 1968, when, as a young man, he apprenticed under the legendary Preben Holm. Holm quickly recognized his extraordinary talent, and Winslow rose to become production manager. When the workshop closed in 1985, Poul struck out on his own, setting up a small workshop in his home in Hvidovre. There, over the course of nearly four decades, he developed his own unique, unmistakable style. He became renowned for his diverse freehand shapes, his artful use of colorful, handmade acrylic accents, and a selection of wood that is second to none.

Yet, for all the aesthetic appeal, Poul never focused solely on the exterior. Holding a Winslow pipe, you sense not only the balance of the wood and the precision of the stem—you can taste the difference, too. Technical excellence was always a priority for Poul: precise drilling, perfectly aligned draft holes, and flawless airflow are standard features of his work. These are pipes crafted by a master who understands and loves the craft through and through.

For us at the shop, this farewell is bittersweet, yet also a cause for celebration. We managed to secure a few final, exclusive pieces just before production ceased. We will be uploading these unique creations to our shop in the coming days. Once they are sold out, they will only be available on the secondary market. So, if you have long had your eye on a genuine Winslow or wish to add a final masterpiece to your collection, now is the time. Thank you, Poul, for decades of craftsmanship, passion, and incomparable pipes.
