William "Ashton" Taylor’s career in the pipe world began at the tender age of 15 with an apprenticeship at the renowned London firm Dunhill. There, he spent years learning the secrets of pipe making from Dunhill’s master craftsmen. In the 1980s, he founded his own company, Ashton. The pipes are characterized by a classic, elegant English style. What makes them remarkable is not only their stunning beauty but also their intrinsic qualities; a special treatment known as "oil-curing" gives Ashton pipes an exceptional smoking quality. The stems are made from a material that combines the pleasantly soft bite of ebonite with the low-maintenance nature of acrylic. Because the material is unique, smokers eventually dubbed it "Ashtonite." Both the oil-curing process and the composition of Ashtonite remain closely guarded company secrets to this day. William Taylor passed on Ashton’s traditions, techniques, and craftsmanship to Jimmy Craig. Following William’s passing in 2009, production has continued seamlessly, upholding the Ashton legacy to the present day.
