The roots of Design Berlin date back to 1948, when Hubert Hartmann laid the foundation for production in Gotha, Thuringia. During the GDR era, the company developed into the most important center for pipe manufacturing in East Germany. Following reunification, the Design Berlin (db) brand emerged from this long-standing tradition of craftsmanship and quickly established an international reputation. In the late 1990s, Manfred Obermann—owner of the renowned Berlin-based tobacco manufacturer Planta—acquired the brand and successfully managed it for many years. When the family business decided to discontinue artisanal pipe production in 2017, the focus shifted entirely to tobacco production. Two years later, in 2019, the Obermann family sold the entire Planta company, including all trademark rights, to the Danish tobacco group Mac Baren. However, the story of this iconic brand did not end there: in 2026, the long-established companies Denicotea and Linden GmbH jointly secured the trademark rights to db Design. Thanks to this strong partnership, Design Berlin’s iconic designs and commitment to high quality are now experiencing a revival.
