White Elephant is known as a solid manufacturer of pipe filters and pipe cleaners from Ettenstatt, Franconia, founded by Robert Maderholz. In Germany, White Elephant is the sole producer of pipe cleaners. There are only 3 manufacturers in all of Europe.
However, the company's roots lie in pipe making. Robert Maderholz produced pipes from 1945 to 1984. Later they specialized in filters and over the years also in cleaners.
With the help of the Kopp company, pipes were added to the range again and, in 2023, pipe tobacco.
Briar is currently rare because, after the Corona pandemic, many workers in the briar industry looked for other work. However, hardly anyone wanted to go back to the strenuous and demanding job. Together with high demand from Asia, we are currently experiencing a somewhat tighter availability for good quality and large blocks than a few years ago.
These pipes with large bowls are all the more astonishing. A small Italian manufacturer was able to organize a limited number of large blocks and has now built these beautiful pipes for White Elephant. It's worth getting one!
